I liked this piece. It was fun researching and I was accompanied by a hugely talented photographer, Sam Faulkner. We were introduced to the Eight Tray Crips by Leon Bing, author of ‘Do or Die’, and spent about ten days with them. The feature was one of a pair commissioned by Esquire (the Aronow article was the other): actually Esquire only wanted the Aronow piece but the cost of flying out to Miami and researching it were too high to justify on the basis of one article alone, so we pitched this as an afterthought – kind of a ‘two for the price of one-and-a-half’ deal. Ironically, this one turned out a lot better than the original commission.
